Why Spotify linking is paused
Resonance is Apple Music-first because Spotify's current production access rules do not give small consumer apps a practical path to support broad public linking.
The short version
Spotify still offers a Web API, but newly-created apps start in development mode. In that mode, Spotify requires users to be manually allowlisted before their API requests work, and the allowlist is intentionally small. That is fine for testing; it does not work for a public social app.
Spotify's broader extended quota mode is now reserved for approved partner applications that meet Spotify's criteria. Their published requirements include an established business entity, an active launched service, and at least 250k monthly active users.
What this means in Resonance
- Apple Music is the supported music source for new account linking.
- Spotify buttons may still appear where an existing song or account already has Spotify data.
- New Spotify OAuth linking is paused instead of sending users into a flow that is likely to fail outside our tiny test allowlist.
- If Spotify changes access or approves Resonance for production use, we can re-enable the existing Spotify integration.
